Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of single motherhood in contemporary film productions available on streaming platforms, using the films Straw and Earth Mama as its corpus. Anchored in Cultural Studies in Education and Feminist Studies, the research mobilizes cultural analysis to examine discourses and representations of motherhood. The results show that the films foreground the burdens of single motherhood, mainly the concentration of caregiving responsibilities on mothers, aggravated by contexts of socioeconomic vulnerability. Forms of symbolic imprisonment associated with the captivity and apparatus of motherhood are also identified. The study concludes that the media participate in the production of meanings that (re)configure the limits and possibilities of the exercise of motherhood in contemporary society.
