Artificial intelligence, gender and race in the editorial guidelines of legacy media
omissions, challenges and opportunities for revising AI use policies in newsrooms

This article presents a critical analysis of the editorial guidelines of eight Brazilian and international media organizations regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence, investigating whether—and how—issues of gender and race are incorporated into these documents. Drawing on the concepts of platformization, intersectionality, and data colonialism, we developed a qualitative study based on content analysis. Manuals and editorial guidelines published on the websites of the selected organizations were examined, focusing on three analytical categories: references to diversity, mitigation of algorithmic bias, and guidance regarding gender and racial stereotypes. The findings indicate that, although these organizations generally acknowledge the existence o f biases associated with the use of AI, none incorporates a structured intersectional approach within their guidelines.
