Abstract

The article examines representations of motherhood in advertisements in O Cruzeiro magazine between 1955 and 1959, treating print advertisements as cultural devices for the production and circulation of meanings about femininity. Based on the premise that the media participates in shaping social imaginaries and naturalizing gender roles, the study investigates how advertising articulated motherhood, care, and consumption in the construction of the figure of the woman-mother, associating women with the organization of domestic space, the education of children, and the maintenance of family wellbeing. Methodologically, the study uses content analysis, with the selection of categories related to domestic consumption, family life, and female appearance. The discussion highlights how advertising contributed to consolidating normative representations of motherhood and families in the mid-20th century.
